What is training?

A trained dog has a job.  A "trained dog" puts forth a diligent effort to work for you.  It's a team effort.

Some Basic "Manners" every dog will learn:

  • Not jumping, alternate behavior of sitting
  • Not rushing through doorways
  • Potty training
  • Eliminate nuisance barking
  • Any customized specifics or goals you have
Socialization for every dog:
  • Interacting with other dogs
  • Meeting new people
  • Accepting handling and exams
  • New environments and situations
  • Basic obstacles
  • Positive associations


The Foundation Obedience:

  • Verbal and hand signals
  • On-leash heeling (walking by your side, not pulling, making turns with you)
  • Sit, down, stay, stand
  • Sit and down both from heel position and abstract positions
  • Sit-stay, down-stay, stand-stay
  • Sit-stay out of sight
  • Long down stay 5-10 minutes
  • Down stay out of sight
  • Down-stay under heavy distraction (noises, toys, other dogs, etc)
  • Leave-it (food refusal)
  • Come when called, on leash and on long-line
  • Accept petting by a friendly stranger while holding a sit-stay
  • All obedience around heavy distraction (dogs, people, toys, outside, on street, etc.)

4-week obedience program:

  • Off leash heeling (by your side, not pulling, making turns with you)
  • Automatic sits (when you stop, dog sits)
  • Sit, down, stay, stand, all off leash
  • Sit-stay, down-stay, stand-stay
  • Sit-stay out of sight
  • Long down stay 10-15 minutes out of sight
  • Down-stay with distractions
  • Leave-it (food refusal)
  • Come when called
  • Come when called from a distraction (ex. while playing with another dog)
  • Front & finish flip heel
  • Stand out of motion
  • Sits out of motion
  • Downs out of motion
  • Come to heel from any position
  • Commands given through a window by hand signals
  • Distance commands

 Miscellaneous training and commands:

  • Retrieval of objects
  • Tricks- weave, bow, stick em up, etc
  • Place command "bed"
  • Scent discrimination and tracking
  • Automatic sits
  • Confidence-building obstacles
  • "Look" (watch your face)
  • Focused heel (for competition training)
